Over the past four years, the "Designing Efficient Workbooks" whitepaper has been a popular guide to improving performance. This session presented by the whitepaper's author, will cover the main causes of slow workbooks, and offer practical suggestions on how to improve them. Some topics we'll cover in this session:
- Defining efficiency and why you should care
- Diagnosing the cause of slow workbooks (Is it the workbook design, the query, the data source, environmental factors?)
This session is aimed at both technical and business users.
Concerned about hardware scalability for your Tableau Server? Curious about the optimal deployment configuration for your environment? Have the desire to accelerate the multi-week load testing effort required for go-live? Meet TabJolt a “point-and-run” load and performance testing tool built by Tableau’s engineering team. TabJolt is specifically designed for Server Administrators to automatically load and interact with visualizations on their Tableau Server without the time consuming tasks of script development or maintenance.
In this 2-hour hands-on training, we will give you an opportunity to use TabJolt to push a heavy workload to Tableau Server in an AWS test environment and analyze how the Server responds under load. Take the TabJolt application home to your deployment along with knowledge on installation, how it works, when to use it, pointers for test scenario design, and interpretation of results.
Tableau recently introduced cross-database joins. Join us to take a peek under the hood to see how Tableau queries for data in multiple databases. We’ll also discuss the query implications of using the union feature in Tableau. In this session we’ll cover:
- How cross-database queries and cross-database work in Tableau
- The flow of the query pipeline in Tableau with multiple data sources
- The architecture of the underlying data model for multi-database scenarios
- How Tableau deals with data types across different data sources
- What parts of query processing is done remotely in the database versus in Tableau
- How Tableau deals with differences in functionality across different databases
- Performance impact of cross-database joins
- How to identify relevant information in the Tableau log files for cross-database joins
- How to optimize your usage of cross-database joins for optimal performance
- Plans and ideas for the future

Tired of staring at a blank web page with a spinner? Wonder why your Tableau dashboard loads quickly in Tableau Desktop but takes forever to load on the web? Come learn what factors play a role in how a dashboard performs on the server and what you can do to create better performance for your end users. We'll also share some of our processes for measuring performance and identifying bottlenecks, and how you can apply them in your own deployments.

Boom! With the hyper database as its new backend, future tableau products will offer a totally new user experience in terms of performance and features. But why? Why is hyper so fast? And how can it enable new features, which were totally infeasible before? How can a database revolutionize visual analytics? In this talk we will shed light on the core concepts of the hyper database. We will delve into the details about why hyper is faster than any other database. Finally, we will also depict how all this cool stuff can benefit visual analytics and what new use cases it can enable. Think about a workbook visualizing millions or even billions of rows of data that are just a few seconds old. Think about all the new cool stuff you will be able to do, and the new questions you will be able to answer. How is that possible, you ask? Come to this talk, and we will let you know.
Come and learn from Tableau’s Performance SWAT Team about all the knobs and dials you can use to tune your enterprise's Tableau Server deployment to maximize performance. Come to learn about:
- Adjusting your topology based on your usage
- Small workbook tweaks with big impacts
- How to monitor various performance aspects on Tableau Server
- How Tableau utilizes the resources on your host
- Reducing query times with data base tweaks

Functionally validating and doing user acceptance testing can take weeks, and because of the infinite number of use cases, it is error prone for an ad hoc analytics tool like Tableau. How do you minimize time required to test your workbooks before upgrading or going live to production? Scout is a performance tool that can execute directed or undirected exploration of the product to record performance and identify regressions. This session will cover the common scenarios for running Scout and walk you through an analysis of the results to find performance issues.
