In 2015 and 2016 MedStar Health had two seemingly competitive activities underway: pockets of individuals using Tableau, and the establishment of a group to inform an enterprise-wide analytics strategy centered on a single version of the truth. Among those using Tableau were individuals in MedStar Health's Institute for Innovation (MI2) experimenting with specific point solutions. In the end the two groups came together to develop a strategy based on Gartner's paper 'How to Architect the BI and Analytics Platform'.
In this session we will share our discovery process from isolated knowledge and use of Tableau to merging with the enterprise-wide strategy and evolving the culture of data & analytics to support data-informed decision making. We will discuss grassroots strategies for increasing knowledge and use of Tableau across the system, engaging executives to interact with the data rather than static reports, the process and benefits of establishing standards and applying a product development approach for building and maintaining dashboards, and the challenges faced in pulling data together and blending it from multiple sources.
Examples will include:
- Using Tableau to reveal successful patient recruitment strategies that were shared across the enterprise to meet a meaningful use requirement for patient portal interaction.
- Using Tableau to monitor clinical quality performance and identify opportunities for improvement, replacing an antiquated, static, and manually resource intensive 300+ Excel report that presented six infection control metrics for our 10-hospital system.
