It all started when you realized that Tableau Workbook and Tableau Data Source files (.twb/.tds) were just XML documents. This simple fact combined with your scripting powers, the REST API, and an elevated midi-chlorian count took you down a dark and unsupported path. Simply changing the data source was not enough. You began modifying custom SQL, changing parameter values, customizing titles and captions, and scanning for hex codes that were not in line with the Empire's corporate style guide. Then you updated Tableau, the XML schema changed, and your code broke, forcing you to air-choke a number of your underlings. Fortunately for you, the Development Team at Tableau has been putting together a new Document API, which will allow you to commune with your content in a fully-supported fashion. This session will showcase the current features of the Document API as well as some of the functionality that will be introduced in the near future. We will also discuss a few of the various use-cases that the API is being designed to address.
